LOS ANGELES (Jan. 31) - Britney Spears was taken from her home by ambulance early Thursday and escorted to the hospital by more than a dozen police officers.
A Los Angeles police officer, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said the 26-year-old pop star was being taken to "get help" but did not give the ambulance's destination. The Los Angeles Times cited unnamed authorities who said Spears was being placed on a "mental evaluation hold."
Security guards stand outside of the UCLA Medical Center after Britney Spears was taken there by ambulance with a police escort. She will be held for a 72-hour evaluation, known as a 5150.

Brad and Angelina steal the show at the Screen Actors Guild Awards
On a night full of headline-making moments it was Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who hogged the spotlight at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend.
As reports they're expecting a new addition to their family circulate in the US, the photogenic duo seemed especially affectionate, sharing a lingering kiss during the ceremony. And the loose-fitting gown chosen by the Tomb Raider actress - who was nominated for her role in A Mighty Heart - did nothing to dispel speculation she might be pregnant.
The pair, already adoptive parents to Maddox, six, Zahara, three, four-year-old Pax Thien and their natural daughter, one-year-old Shiloh, have made no secret of the fact they want another child. And it seems their wish may be granted twice over as reports published Stateside speak of the Angelina expecting twins.

And the jet-setting star, who showed off her enviable curves on the red carpet in a backless silver gown, revealed she was star struck by Brad and Angelina. At the glitzy ceremony, the assembled celeb audience saw Oscar-nominated Julie Christie walk away with the best actress gong for her role in Away From Her, and Daniel Day-Lewis win the best actor award for There Will Be Blood. Also picking up trophies were Sopranos actor James Gandolfini, who scooped a gong for best male actor in a series, and Spanish hunk Javier Bardem - named best supporting actor.

Questions Hang Over Ledger's Last Films
Batman' PR Push and Terry Gilliam Fantasy Impacted by Star's Death
(Jan. 24) - Heath Ledger's take on the Joker in the upcoming Batman sequel 'The Dark Knight' has been a major selling point in the film's early marketing campaign. But just days after his sudden death, his impact on the final publicity push for the sure-summer blockbuster is very much in doubt.

Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker in the upcoming Batman sequel 'The Dark Knight' has been the major selling point in the film's earlier advertising. Now, Ledger's death leaves Warner Bros. wondering how to promote the film.
Ledger's face made up in grotesque makeup has been a pivotal part of the film's teaser advertising. On the film's main poster, he draws 'Why So Serious' in what looks to be blood. Shots of Ledger in action as the supervillain were the most anticipated parts of a recent, extended 'Dark Knight' trailer. A special bonus scene focusing on Ledger's character was turned into a selling point for Warner Bros. 'I Am Legend' when it was paired with the Will Smith feature on IMAX screens in December.
'Dark Knight' will hit theaters on July 18 and Ledger's work for the film is already complete.
But just how much a part of the ad campaign Ledger will be remains a mystery. Variety reports that Warner Brothers, the studio releasing 'Knight,' had planned on using Ledger's ghoulish joker as the center of the ads through March. With a recent, unrelated restructuring of their marketing department, changes on the fly might be harder to achieve.
Warner Bros. released a statement following Ledger's death. "The studio is stunned and devastated by this tragic news. Heath was a brilliant actor and an exceptional person."
Whether they studio continues with the normal junket process in the summer will be seen. But even without a standard PR push, the movie seems a sure bet for box office success. After all, 2005's 'Batman Begins' had a domestic gross of $205 million.
Buzz around Ledger's performance -- a re-imagining of Jack Nicholson's take on Batman's nemesis from the 1989 Tim Burton film -- had already been at a fever pitch before his death. Co-star Michael Caine gushed last fall about the performance. "He's gone in a completely different direction to Jack (Nicholson). Jack was like a clown figure, benign but wicked, maybe a killer old uncle. He could be funny and make you laugh," Caine said according to the Melbourne Herald Sun. "Heath is like a really scary psychopath ... He's a lovely guy and his Joker is going to be a hell of a revelation in this picture."
While Ledger's death won't hold up the completion of 'Dark Knight,' it poses a major problem for 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,' a Terry Gilliam fantasy that was shooting in London. A manager of the film crew's union confirmed to PEOPLE that the production was shut down.
Variety lists various possible options for 'Parnassus,' including replacing Ledger in his role. The insurance company will likely determine the fate of the $30 million movie.
The New York Times reports that only 18 days of filming had been completed on the film, suggesting that about $14 million had been spent, and that Mr. Ledger had been named an 'essential element' in the film's cast insurance policy.

The Grammy winner is helping to spread the word about the leading killer of women.
At a fit 110 pounds, 40-year-old Grammy winner Toni Braxton hardly seems like a poster girl for heart disease. But she is—literally. Four years ago Braxton felt tired and short of breath, with "tightness" in her chest. She chalked it up to starring in "Aida" and to being a new mom to sons Denim, now 6, and Diesel, now 4. She even wondered if it was her childhood asthma recurring. Finally, during an "Aida" intermission, she felt the room "spinning a little bit," she says. She wound up in the emergency room—and learned that she suffered from pericarditis, an inflammation of the lining of the heart. Because of the pericarditis, her heart flutters now. Also, last year Braxton found out that she also had high blood pressure: 160/105 without medication. Now she takes a beta-blocker to lower it and walks on a treadmill at least 20 minutes a day. She also tries to resist her salty favorite foods, like burgers with bacon. Instead she opts for "vinegary salads," asparagus and low-sodium chicken and jambalaya soups.
When most Americans think about someone with heart disease, they don't envision Braxton. "You think it's some older guy, retired," says the R&B singer and songwriter, who is now serving as a spokeswoman for Campbell Soup Co.'s GoRedWithCampbells.com. (The company is donating $1 to the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign for every person who votes for his or her favorite red dress before Jan. 30.) "You can be in your 30s, less than 115 pounds, exercise—and have heart disease."

The Brady Bunch' Butcher Dies
Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, said Amalia Melvin, his wife of 64 years.
Remembering Lost TV Stars
Allan Melvin, Jan. 17: The TV veteran's defining role was as Sam the butcher on 'The Brady Bunch,' but he also voiced several cartoon characters, including Magilla Gorilla. He died of cancer at the age of 84.
The jowly, jovial Melvin spent decades playing a series of sidekicks, second bananas and lovable lugs, including Archie Bunker's friend Barney Hefner on "All in the Family," and Sgt. Bilko's right-hand man Cpl. Henshaw on the "Phil Silvers Show."
But his place in pop culture will be fixed as butcher and bowler Sam Franklin, the love interest of Brady family maid Alice Nelson, who was played by Ann B. Davis. Melvin played the role from 1970 to 1973.
Born in Kansas City, Mo., in 1923, Melvin grew up in New York and attended Columbia University. LOS ANGELES (Jan. 19) - Allan Melvin, a character actor best known for playing Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," has died. He was 84.
He was appearing on Broadway in "Stalag 17" when he began his decades-long television career with "The Phil Silvers Show," playing a role his wife said was always his favorite.
"He was proudest of that show," Amalia Melvin said. "I think the camaraderie of all those guys made it such a pleasant way to work. They were so relaxed."
He saw steady employment as a voice actor from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, most famously providing the voice of "Magilla Gorilla" for the Hanna Barbera cartoon of the same name.
His other credits include several guest appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show," ''Gomer Pyle: USMC," and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."
In addition to Amalia, Melvin is survived by daughter Jennifer Hanson and grandson Jon Hanson Jr. A daughter, Mya, died in 1970.

Seacrest also joked that Abdul's new song "was inspired by the love these two [Abdul and Jackson] have for each other." He later said that while the song was playing on the air, Abdul walked over in the studio and gave Jackson a hug and then held the embrace for a long time.
"It just seemed the right time," Abdul said of creating the new record, given that her last single was released in 1993. "The timing just came together."
Also on Grammy-winning producer Jackson's album, which will be released March 11, will be Mariah Carey, Joss Stone, Travis Tritt, Richie Sambora, Idol contestants Katharine McPhee and Elliot Yamin.
Boyfriend Carries Purse
During the KIIS visit, much was also made about Abdul's boyfriend, restaurateur J.T. Torregiani, carrying her purse when she arrived for the interview.
Another lengthy conversation was devoted to a photo of the trio's Idol colleague Simon Cowell that appears in Heat, a U.K. publication Seacrest called "a gay magazine." In the shot, according to their conversation, Cowell is bare-chested and labeled "Torso of the Week."
Getting Cowell on the phone over in England, Seacrest told him that he was missing Abdul's single premiere in L.A. Frankly, Cowell didn't seem to give a damn.

Britney Spears Should Be Allowed To See Her Sons
NEW YORK - Despite Britney Spears’ erratic behavior, most people think the troubled pop star should be allowed to see her two sons a few times a week under supervision while ex-husband Kevin Federline retains custody, according to an E-Poll/Reuters survey.
Spears, 26, lost custody of her children last year after a series of strange episodes in the wake of splitting from Federline including being photographed without underwear, shaving her head, and attacking a car with an umbrella.
She was barred from visiting her sons earlier this month after refusing to return the boys and being hospitalized for two days. She failed to make a custody hearing on Monday with another hearing scheduled for Feb. 19.
Some people have written off the singer, with a survey by E-Poll Market Research conducted for Reuters, finding 26 percent of those questioned believe she should not be allowed to see her children at all.
But the survey found some sympathy, with 51 percent of people said Spears should be allowed to visit 2-year-old Sean Preston and Jayden James, 1, a few times a week supervised.
Only 1 percent backed Spears getting full custody of the boys while the rest did not know or wanted unlimited visits.
Spears needs to grow up
But the overwhelming message from the survey of 1,941 American adults was that Spears needed to stop drinking and taking drugs, change her friends, and grow up. Others voiced opinion that she was suffering some mental illness.
“She needs to clean up her act and start acting like a responsible adult and mother and not like a spoiled brat,” said one survey participant. “She will eventually be dead if she does not change her lifestyle.”
The majority of people, or 62 percent, blamed alcohol and drugs for the downfall of Spears who was the world’s top-selling female artist in the early 2000s.
Two out of 10, however, blamed the Hollywood environment while one in 10 thought her parents were at fault.

More than any other single artist,
Britney Spears was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late '90s. The blockbuster success of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys certainly paved the way for her own commercial breakthrough, but Spears didn't just become a star -- she was a bona fide pop phenomenon. Not only did she sell millions of records, she was a media fixture regardless of what she was (or wasn't) doing; among female singers of the era (many of whom followed in her footsteps), her celebrity star power was rivaled only by Jennifer Lopez. From the outset, Spears' sex appeal was an important part of her image; the video for her debut single, "...Baby One More Time," outfitted her in full Catholic-school regalia, and sent her well on the way to becoming an international sex symbol.
Yet Spears' handlers seemed to be trying to have it both ways -- there was a definite tension between the wholesome innocence Spears tried to project for her female audience, and the titillating sexuality that enticed so many male fans. Those marketing tactics made Spears a somewhat controversial figure, the subject of endless debates concerning appropriate role models for teenage girls. Early on, Spears tried to defuse the controversy by preaching abstinence until marriage, and even denied that she was consciously cultivating such a sexualized image. Of course, the more provocative and revealing her on-stage wardrobe became, the less plausible that claim seemed. But apart from her ability to tiptoe the line between virginal coquette and brazen tart, Spears had a secret weapon in Swedish pop mastermind Max Martin, who had a hand in the vast majority of her hits as a writer and/or producer. With Martin crafting the sort of contemporary dance-pop and sentimental ballads that made stars of the Backstreet Boys, Spears kept on delivering the goods commercially, as her first three albums all topped the charts.
Britney Jean Spears was born December 2, 1981, in the small town of Kentwood, LA, and began performing as a singer and dancer at a young age. With a nationally televised appearance on Star Search already under her belt, Spears auditioned for the Disney Channel's The New Mickey Mouse Club at age eight. The producers turned her down as too young, but one of them took an interest and introduced her to an agent in New York. Spears spent the next three years studying at the Professional Performing Arts School, and also appeared in several television commercials and off-Broadway plays. At 11, she returned to The New Mickey Mouse Club for a second audition, and this time made the cut. Although her fellow Mouseketeers included an impressive array of future stars -- *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez, Christina Aguilera, and Felicity actress Keri Russell -- the show was canceled after Spears' second season. She returned to New York at age 15 and set about auditioning for pop bands and recording demo tapes, one of which eventually landed her a deal with Jive Records.

Former beauty queen from Essex has become the first evictee from the Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack house.
Jade Eden, a 21-year-old former Miss England contestant who came third in the competition, wept as she found she had been chosen by E4 viewers to leave the house.
Londoner Jade, who has been a member of Mensa since the age of four, was put up for eviction after receiving five nominations from her fellow housemates.
She was up against gymnast Victor Arata and racing driver Jeremy Metcalfe for the public vote. Jeremy, 19, also received five votes from the other talented young people in the house, while Victor proved the least popular with eight votes.
She said: "I had so much fun, I really didn't want to go. It was like the most amazing period. I had a great time."
Earlier in the week the 12 contestants explained the reasons for their nominations to guest hijacker Kelly Osbourne. Emilia Arata, sister of Victor, nominated Jade, saying that her experience as a beauty pageant contestant did not equal the talents of the other housemates.
Boxer Anthony Ogogo, singer-songwriter Calista Robertson, youth politician John Laughton and Jade were among those who voted for Victor.
Jade said she chose to nominate him because she did not like the way Victor talked about women.
The latest hijacker, Janet Street-Porter, spent time asking the housemates to commentate on each other, and host a fake chat show in which she was the main guest.
Other guest Big Brothers in the series have included actor Alan Cumming, former footballer Ian Wright, and television presenter Russell Brand.

British TV actor Donald Burton has died at 73, his wife, film star Carroll Baker, has said.
Burton died of emphysema on December 8 at his home in the desert town of Cathedral City, south of Palm Springs, California.
"We would have celebrated our 30th anniversary on March 10," said Ms Baker, who starred in such films as Baby Doll and The Carpetbaggers.
Burton, born in 1934 in Norwich, won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
He was for many years a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing in plays including Hamlet, Henry IV Part Two and The War of the Roses.
His numerous TV roles included Upstairs, Downstairs, in which he played Julius Karekin, The Duchess of Duke Street, Fraud Squad and Public Eye.

As the owner of Priti, the only all-organic spa specializing in luxurious manicures and pedicures in New York City, Australian native Kim D’Amato is at the forefront of a natural beauty revolution. While it’s easier than ever to pop in for a quick manicure and pedicure (or facial or eyebrow wax) at one of the thousands of salons lining the streets of the five boroughs, D’Amato is the only one who has taken a close look at the ingredients contained in the average bottle of nail polish and decided to take a different approach.
All of the polishes and polish removers used at Priti are free from dibutyl phthalate (or DBP), toluene and formaldehyde (ingredients commonly found in most nail color and remover). The Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetic Database has found all three of these ingredients to be extremely toxic, with possible links to cancer.

Scientists found that the protective effects of vitamin E from that period of UV exposure were apparent 2 and 3 days later. The group of people who had vitamin E cream applied to their skin had less signs of inflammation than the group who were given the lotion without vitamin E. Inflammation is a sign of cell damage, and was measured in this study by the amount of blood flow to that area as compared to normal. This was a placebo controlled, double blind study, which means that some people received the lotion with vitamin E, some didn't and neither group knew which it was getting. The conclusions these scientists made were that vitamin E was effective at preventing the visible signs of aging on skin.
Whilst vitamin E in creams and lotions will benefit the skin, there is strong doubt on whether it can help in some of the beauty products it is in. For example, when vitamin E is advertised as being of benefit to strengthen or thicken eyelashes, this is something of a misnomer, and is not supported by science. Paula Begoun, the 'cosmetic cop' writes that there isn't a product out there that will strengthen and thicken eyelashes. The best you can do in this instance is to apply an eyelash primer and mascara to make eyelashes appear thicker. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and the research verifies only benefits that relate to this antioxidant activity.
Another of the promises associated with vitamin E creams is that it helps to heal scars. This is not something that has been verified scientifically. Research quoted in Wikipedia found that when vitamin E was applied to patients who had undergone surgery, it did not reduce the size, shape, or color of scars. In fact, up to one third of patients experienced complications like allergies, dermatitis, and irritation that in fact can make a forming scar worse. Activated manuka honey is a much better option in reducing scarring, and healing skin.

With everything else on your list of "to dos," choosing a makeup artist often falls at the bottom. Unfortunately, many woman wait till the last min and just pick one out of convenience. If this doesn't sound like a big deal, think again. The makeup artist is in charge of perfecting your bridal beauty preparing you for your big day and all the pictures. Use these tips to help find the perfect makeup artist to fit your needs.
They Should Listen: Sure, they are the experts but the fact of the matter is that it's your wedding therefore, if you want to wear green mascara and purple lipstick thats your prerogative and their job to make sure it looks the best it possibly could. When you begin your search for a wedding day makeup artist tell them what your looking for and see how they respond. If they aren't thrilled with what you want and demand the upper hand, look for someone who understands your style.
Look at Previous Work: Previous work is one of the best ways to gage a makeup artist's talent. Most will have a portfolio with pictures of past clients. Ask for a portfolio and flip through it. If you're less than thrilled or don't like their style keep searching for someone who meets your standards.
Bring Pictures: It's highly likely you have been flipping through wedding magazine to help you find out what you want on your wedding day and that include what you want your makeup to look like. If you find a particular style, color, or look that you absolutely love, cut the picture out and bring it with you. Your makeup artist will thank you for the example and you'll find it much easier to get what you want when you come prepared with a visual.
Nothing but the Best: Your paying to have your makeup done professionally and therefore should expect professional makeup or at least that of good quality. You want to make sure your lipstick doesn't go become your husband's after the first kiss and that your mascara makes it through your tears of joy. Ask your makeup artist about the products they use on their clients.
Insist on a Dry Run Appointment: Weddings take a great deal of practice and planning and that includes your appearance. You probably looked at tons of dresses, flowers, and cakes before you made a decision. Likewise you will or at least should have your hair done before the wedding day; you will try your dress on; and you will rehearse the day before. Make sure the makeup artist you choose will set up prior appointment to figure out what will look best. The last thing you want to do is go in blindly the day of your wedding and come out with makeup you hate.
Let Them Know If You Don't Like It: Having your makeup done professionally is one way to be sure you look your best on your wedding day. Since you are paying to have it done you have every right to like the way you look. If you don't like the way your eyes came out or aren't a fan of that particular shade of lipstick, let the makeup artist know. This is your big day and you should be one hundred percent satisfied with the way you look after you leave their chair.
