TV ACTOR DONALD BURTON DIES AGED 73

British TV actor Donald Burton has died at 73, his wife, film star Carroll Baker, has said.

Burton died of emphysema on December 8 at his home in the desert town of Cathedral City, south of Palm Springs, California.

"We would have celebrated our 30th anniversary on March 10," said Ms Baker, who starred in such films as Baby Doll and The Carpetbaggers.

Burton, born in 1934 in Norwich, won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

He was for many years a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing in plays including Hamlet, Henry IV Part Two and The War of the Roses.

His numerous TV roles included Upstairs, Downstairs, in which he played Julius Karekin, The Duchess of Duke Street, Fraud Squad and Public Eye.

He has three adult children from previous marriages.
